Vasas FC visit the MOL Arena Sóstó on Saturday evening

On Saturday at 20:15 we will host the Angyalföld side in the 22nd round of the OTP Bank Liga.

On Saturday night we meet the Budapest side for the 96th time in the top flight. We have won 33 of the 95 matches we have played against each other so far, with 32 draws and 30 Angyalföld victories. The goal difference is 137-126 in our favour.

It was 55 years ago, on 2nd March 1968, that Vidi played their first ever NB I match against Vasas.

The first Vidi-Vasas 2-2

Despite the fact that the red-blue team from the capital had little success in Székesfehérvár, one of the most memorable NB I matches for us is the Vidi-Vasas game. Those who were there will never forget the 16th June 1999. The last, 34th round of the 18-team NB I. The last three finishers were relegated. Before the match, our team was in 15th place, one point behind 14th placed Siófok. Our goal difference was -18, while Siófok's was -16. The formula was as follows: if we won in the last round and Siófok didn't win at home to DVSC, who were then a mid-table team, we would definitely stay up. If both teams lost or both teams drew in the last round, we would be relegated. If we drew with Vasas and Siófok only lost by 1 goal in Debrecen, we would go down, if they lose by more goals, we stay up, because we have a better goal difference. Of course, the last round was the most dramatic scenario. We drew 2-2 with Vasas at home, in a battle that went down to the wire, while DVSC - whose fans were still on good terms with the Vidi supporters at the time - beat the Balaton side 1-0 with a big banner saying "Save Vidi!" before their match against Siófok. In other words, in 1999, it was down to a single goal that our team would not play in the top division the following season. It also meant that we not only played our first ever first division game against Vasas, but also the last top flight game of the 20th century - only to return to the top division a year later in the second division, having collected 101 league points and scored 104 goals (still a record), but that's another story.

The most joyous Vidi-Vasas 2-2

Seven years after the game against Vasas that sent them to the knockout stage, the two teams played a crucial match. This time, however, the stakes were not relegation, but the Hungarian Cup. On 17 May 2006, in front of 6,500 spectators at the Ferencváros Stadium on Üllői út, we won the Hungarian Cup for the first time in our history. The score in normal time was 2-2, and as no goal was scored in extra time, we went to penalty kicks, which we won 6-5.

After 21 rounds of the 2022/2023 season, Vasas are in last place with 19 points

Saturday's opponent has a total of 19 points in 21 rounds (3 wins, 10 draws, 8 losses). Budapest Honvéd also have 19 points, and although the Angyalföld side have a better goal difference than the red and blacks, they are ahead in the table because they have more wins.

Vasas have beaten Paks, Mezőkövesd and us so far this season. In the 2023 season, the Angyalföld-based team is still winless, with four of their five league games ending in draws (FTC - Vasas 0-0, PAFC - Vasas 1-1, ZTE - Vasas 0-0, Vasas - Kisvárda 2-2), while they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Újpest.

Winter player movement at Vasas FC

In the winter, Vasas' squad did not change much, three players joined the first team and only Krisztián Géresi left on loan to Szeged. Balajti and Varga returned from loan to the second team in NB III, and we are unlikely to see them on the pitch on Saturday night.
Incoming players: János Hegedűs (Diósgyőri VTK, free transfer), József Urblík (free transfer, last with Puskás AFC)
On loan: Norbert Balogh (DAC - Slovakia)
Returning on loan: Ádám Balajti (Tiszakécske - to NB III), Donát Varga (Budafok - to NB III)
On loan: Krisztián Géresi (Szeged-Csanád Grosics Akadémia)
