We spoke to our Northern Macedonian defender about his success in the Nations League, his first goal for the national team and the weekend's match against Újpest.
First of all, congratulations on your successful participation in the Nations League! You confidently won your group and advanced to Division B. What was the secret of your team's success?
We've been working with this coaching staff for almost two years now, largely with the same players. We were not successful in the early days, but then we found the right team chemistry and balance to become a complete unit. Slowly, the results came, and we started to trust ourselves and each other more and more. As a result, we won our group, winning five out of six matches and drawing one. We only conceded one goal, and that was from a penalty. I'm delighted to have qualified, we're having a great time with the national team.
You scored your first goal for the national team against Latvia, and it was an important goal on the way to winning the group. How do you remember it?
When I started playing football as a kid, my dream was to represent my country and score a goal in a match like that if possible. I've played 20 games for the national team, it was my first goal and I'll always remember it. Not just the goal, the whole match. It was a fantastic feeling to score in front of my family and friends, in front of the home fans.
On Saturday, Újpest, with many of your former teammates in their ranks, arrive here. What do you expect from this match?
I expect a very tough game, Újpest is a strong team with a good coach. They have good players, many of whom we know from playing for Vidi last season. So we know them, they know us, it will be an exciting battle. Our first meeting was won by Újpest, but the difference between the teams was not as big as the result showed. It will be the small details that will decide on Saturday. I hope we keep the three points at home.
