Two second half goals have given Videoton a lead to take in to Tuesday's second leg.
Videoton took on Balzan FC of Malta on Thursday evening at Felcsut in the EL Q1, 1st leg.
Vidi enjoyed more of the ball in the early exchanges but without creating a real chance in front of goal. That first real chance arrived on 15 minutes when Nego got hold of the ball and fed Scepovic, who played it onto Bodi, who took aimed to shoot at goal, but a defender managed to deny him in the last moment. A Lazovic cross after 27 minutes resulted in a Balzan defender heading at his own goal, but Janjusevic reacted well to pull off a good save. Suljic passed the ball out wide on the left to Stopira, who from 7 meters out shot over from a tight angle.
There were no changes at the break from either side. Balzan's Paul Fenech had an effort after 48 minutes, as did Kalijevic, who shot just wide after 55 minutes. Moments later Ryan Fenech saw his free kick saved by Kovacsik in the Videoton goal. The action continued in front of a good sized crowd inside the Pancho Arena. Bodi had a shot on 63 minutes but he looked on as a defender managed to clear it off the line. A Stopira cross minutes later was headed just wide by Scepovic. Geresi twice targeted the visiting goal on 72 minutes, with the second chance being dangerous, but Janjusevic managed to save it. Lazovic was fouled after 73 minutes inside the box and Scepovic stood behind the ball for the resulting penalty. However, a powerful shot came back off the bar and bounced just the wrong side of the goal line as the ball came back out and the score remained 0-0.
Effiong had a chance for the visitors after 78 minutes as his shot from 16 meters was saved by Kovacsik. The breakthrough finally arrived a minute later when a good ball in from Geresi was converted into the far corner by Scepovic 1-0! It was also the 150th Videoton goal in European competition.
Vidi continued to press the pedal in the remaining minutes with the visitors trying hard not to concede a further goal. However, it was not to be as a 94th minute attack resulted in a Nego cross from the right, being headed at goal by Hadzic, which the keeper parried and the rebound fell to Lazovic, who made it 2-0.
Videoton will take a 2-0 lead into the second leg on the 4th July.
