Big games against Debrecen - Part 1

We take a look back at some memorable games between the two clubs.

Season 1986-87 saw the two clubs meet in week 6 in Szekesfehervar. The Debrecen side were then known as DMVSC. Vidi went into the game in 9th place after 5 matches with their opponents a place behind in 10th. Both teams had collected 5 points up until that point with 2 wins, a draw and 2 defeats. Vidi enjoyed a better goal difference.

5000 present and six goals

Some 5000 were present on the 13th September at the Sostoi stadium. Peter Disztl was recognised for his 200th NB I appearance before the kick off. Reports from the match commented on both managers expecting their sides to play confident attacking football.

Two goal lead at half time but a tense finish

"With 23 minutes played, a cross from Nemeth was pounced on by Wittman and his header looped over into the right corner of the net. (1-0). Another defensive error after 27 minutes produced the second goal for the home team. Nagy tried to pass the ball back but it was short and Kanyok reacted to it fast. However, he was fouled by Mezo and the referee pointed at the penalty spot. Kovacs sent his spot kick past keeper Mezo to make it 2-0. A 67th minute Kovacs corner was volleyed at goal by Kanyok, and the ball came powerfully off the bar and over the line to make it 3-0. Many thought the visitors would collapse. However, it was not to be as Debrecen scored a consolation goal after 70 minutes. Mortel broke towards goal and Peter Disztl raced out and it appeared he would get the ball, but the Debrecen forward managed to reach it first and rolled the ball home to make it 3-1. Mariasi released Kanyok down the right after 73 minutes and he sent a lovely ball into the middle for Kovacs to volley home (4-1). Mortel scored his second goal after 85 minutes to make the final score 4-2.
