A hard working performance with goals from Nikolics and Mitrovics secured Videoton a 2-0 league win over Kecskemet
Videoton emerged winners in what was described as an important league match. Kecskemet manager Ferenc Horvath has been in charge of 5 games so far, and had yet to taste defeat, with his side picking up 13 points from the previous 5 games. No one was predicting this game to be an easy one for Videoton, and that is exactly how things turned out. Several results from the other league matches were kind to Vidi, with MTK losing at home to leaders Győr, and second place Debrecen suffering a 2-1 loss at Ferencvaros. That gave Paulo Sousa's side the chance to close the gap with the top three. The home win over Kecskemet also means that Vidi are now a win away from second place in the league table.
There were very few chances in the opening exchanges, but referee Adam Farkas was a busy man, handing out his first yellow card after just 6 minutes. In fact the match official would go on to issue several more bookings in what was a battling game. It also meant that the hard and often badly timed challenges were going on out on the pitch. Proof of this was the fact that two Videoton players, Caneira and Oliveria, were both taken to the local hospital for a check up. Luckily the forced substitutions did not upset Videoton's game too much, with the replacements doing well. Vidi enjoyed more of the possession but chances were few and far between.
The second half turned out to be much more eventful than the first. Vidi's former captain, Balazs Farkas, was sent off for his second booking of the match in the 59th minute. Farkas left his foot in a challenge with Istvan Kovacs and the referee had no option but to show the red. Kovacs had a chance on goal following a 62nd minute Haraszti corner kick. However, his powerful shot deflected off a defender and Kecskemet cleared the danger. The deadlock was broken two minutes later, when Neto sent a lovely long ball forward into the path of Nikolics, who kept his composure to beat the keeper, despite the efforts of former Vidi defender Vasko. It was the Videoton forward's 9th goal of the season so far, taking him to second in the top goalscorers table.
Defender Poti rescued his side at the last moment following excellent work by young Kovacs, who was showing his usual skillful football throughout the match. Vasko did have a header go over the bar, after a 78th minute free kick by Savic. KTE manager sent on a forward despite his side being down to ten men. It was only normal as he wanted to protect his unbeaten run as manager, and hoped his side would force an equaliser. The game was made safe in the 86th minute when Kovacs cut the ball back from the right, and substitute Mitrovics hit the ball sweetly into the far corner of the net. It capped a good display from the men in red and blue, who are now nicely placed in the OTP league table.
