Five star display by Videoton in the league cup

Vidi will go in to next weeks second leg in confident mood after beating Debrecen 5-1 away.

Videoton took a break from OTP league football to concentrate on the semi-final of the League cup. Their opponents were Debrecen, who currently lead the domestic league. The first leg tie was played at the Gabor Olah stadium. It was also the last time that Videoton will play there as Debrecen will shortly make the move to their smart new modern stadium.

The first chance of the match fell to Videoton in the 3rd minute. Brachi took a throw in, which was flicked on by Juhasz, with Zé Luis allowing the ball on to Oliveira who shot from 12 meters out with his right foot but it went wide of the goal. Videoton went one better three minutes later. A cross from the right in to the middle by Brachi was met by Nildo, who rose well between two defenders to plant his header into the corner. (0-1).

The score was doubled within two minutes as Vidi continued to put their foot on the pedal. Alvarez found himself inside the penalty area, and then showed good skill to beat his marker and score with a low shot to the left of Verpecz. (0-2).

The 20th minute saw Dombi bring down Oliveira 20 meters from the home goal. Nildo curled the free kick towards goal, which required a good save from Verpecz, who tipped the ball out for a corner. There was almost 24 minutes on the clock before Debrecen recorded their first chance on goal. Volas hit a left foot shot towards the right corner, but Vinicius was in the way and blocked his shot.

Alvarez then went tumbling inside the box in suspicious circumstances a minute later, but the match official waved play on. A free kick on 27 minutes from Alvarez resulted in Zé Luis flicking the ball just wide of the target. There was plenty of action inside the first half hour with Vidi well in control of things at the home of Debrecen. Zé Luis could have made it three in the 31st minute with a big chance. However, Szatmari slid in as the final man to stop the Vidi forward from scoring.

Dombi was then pulled back by Stopira and the resulting free kick from Ferenczi needed Calatayud to tip over. The 40th minute resulted in Alvarez providing Nildo with a lovely ball, who then ran at goal towards Verpecz. The keeper ended up pulling down the pacey Vidi player inside the area and referee Adam Farkas pointed straight at the penalty spot. He also showed a yellow card to the Debrecen keeper. Alvaro Brachi placed the ball on the spot before confidently sending the keeper the wrong way to make it 0-3.

Debrecen manager Elemer Kondas made a change at half time, bringing off Szatmari for international defender Meszaros. The home side started the second half more actively. Spitzmuller then sent a nice volley just wide of Calatayud's goal on 48 minutes. Verpecz had to remain alert on 64 minutes to deny Alvarez, who was clear through on goal. He still managed to shoot from a tight angle, but a defender managed to clear it off the line.

Debrecen scored a consolation goal in the 68th minute. A free kick ended with the ball at the feet of Ferenczi on the left, who crossed the ball into the middle for Ludanszki to use his body to divert the ball beyond Calatayud. (1-3).

The two goal difference between the two sides lasted for just 6 minutes. Zé Luis did very well to flick on a ball on 74 minutes in to the path of Nildo on the left, who kept his composure to slip the ball beyond the keeper to make it 1-4.

Things became even better 7 minutes later with substitute Kovacs supplying Oliveira with a great ball, which ended up with Verpecz being beaten for the fifth time in the match to make the score 1-5. Oliveira did well to find the corner of the net with a low shot.

There were no further goals in the remaining minutes of the match, with Vidi picking up a confident 5-1 away win to take into the second leg next week. The return leg at the Sostoi will take place on Tuesday with a 17:30pm kick off.
