Videoton FC cruised to a magnificent 3-0 away win to go through 4-0 on aggregate
Videoton FC pulled off the best result over possibly the last 25 years, as they confidently beat Gent 4-0 on aggregate. Paulo Sousa's side won the first leg a week ago, by a single goal, thanks to Nemanja Nikolics, and the same player scored another two goals in the return leg on Thursday evening. All the talk leading up to the match was about Gent attacking Videoton on their home pitch, with many regarding the Belgium side as clear favourites. A healthy number of loyal Videoton supporters made the long journey out to give tremendous backing to their side, and the team responded with a great performance, which most Videoton supporters will never forget. The win also means that Videoton will find out who their opponents are in the play-off's for the Europa League, when the draw is made on Friday in Nyon.
The maths was simple with Videoton defending a 1-0 lead, knowing that an away goal would mean that Gent would have to score three times, to have any chance of going through. The Polish match official blew for kick off with Vidi attacking the end housing the travelling Hungarian supporters. It was the home side that made plenty of the running in the opening minutes, putting lots of pressure and dangerous crosses in to the Vidi box. It looked like being a long night for the defence at that point, with Bozsovics often coming to the rescue of his side.
Conte could have put Gent ahead in the opening minute, but Bozsovics was alert enough to deal with the danger. The Belgium side then went on to have a further two good chances inside the first 10 minutes. N'Diaye twice missed in front of goal when it was easier to have scored! The game then turned on 13 minutes, when Videoton's keeper rolled the ball out to Mitrovics. The midfielder then sent a great 40 meters through ball into the path of Oliveria, who caught the home defence sleeping, and the Portuguese player made no mistake as he calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. The goal sent the Vidi fans into raptures, and it also gave Videoton, who were playing in an all red strip, a healthy two goal advantage. Gent continued to apply pressure in search of goals, which they now needed 3 of. However, N'Diaye continued to have a bad day in front of goal, as he continued to miss the chances that came his way.
