Debrecen pick up the Super Cup with a 1-0 win over Videoton
Both managers pointed out before this Hungarian Super Cup final, that they view this match as a useful game to prepare ahead of next weeks European games. It is important to look at the game from this point of view, despite the heavy rain that made condition difficult to play in. It was Vidi manager Gyorgy Mezey who said a while back, that the game should be played in Debrecen, following their double league and cup win last season.
Videoton used this cup game, against perfect opponents, to practice their away tactics. The starting eleven was perhaps not Videoton's strongest side, but they played the classic 4-4-2 formation. In fact striker Nikolics, played a little deeper than normal. Videoton were still very active in the first half. Vidi, who were playing in their yellow away kit, had more chances, and could easily have had a penalty as well. However, they were not able to find the back of the Debrecen net. At the same time Debrecen did not put too much pressure on the Videoton goal. The same applied to the second half, with the game becoming more even.
It took a lucky goal to settle the fate of this Super cup. Mladen Bozsovics misjudged the cross from the right, and Peter Szakaly was on hand to head in. Debrecen picked up the trophy, which will remain with that club. However the real task begins next week when NK Maribor face Videoton in Gyor.
