The MOL Hungarian Cup final takes place on the 3rd May with Vidi facing Ujpest.
Our team will meet Ujpest FC at the Puskas Arena in Budapest in the final of the MOL Hungarian Cup on Monday night. As a prelude to the final, we’ve gathered seven curiosities to help you look forward to the match.
Seventh final
Our club has played in the Hungarian Cup final six times before, of which we have won two. In 2006 we defeated Vasas and then in 2019 we beat Budapest Honved, before that we lost the finals in 1982, 2001, 2011 and 2015.
The date - 3rd May.
Several events are tied to this date, which is noteworthy for Vidi. Let’s start with birthdays: From our current team, our goalkeeping coach Istvan Brockhauser (57) and Oliver Dinnyes (21) will also be celebrating on Monday, as will our former striker and member of the 2011 championship team, Goran Vujovic (34).
In 2015, on this day, we won the second championship title in our history after FTC only drew at PMFC, giving us an unbeatable advantage 4 rounds before the end of the season.
In 1997, we played an away league match away against our cup opponents, Ujpest, who had our sports director, Zoltan Kovacs in their side. In fact, not only was he playing, but in the 91st minute, the hosts won 2-1 with his goal.
The location - Puskas Arena
We haven't played at the Puskas Arena before, which was handed over in November 2019, but several times in its predecessor, the Puskas Ferenc Stadium (until 2002, the People's Stadium). In addition to the league matches, the location of our cup final was the home of the Hungarian national team, in 2011 we played here against Kecskemet, Nemanja Nikolic also scored, but we lost the final 3-2.
Our opponents Ujpest FC
Ujpest are the second oldest founded sports association in Hungary. The football division of the club, which has been operating since 1885, has been active since 1899, winning 20 league titles, 10 cup victories and 3 Super Cup victories in 122 years. Several Olympic champions, Olympic silver and bronze medalists and world champion silver medal footballers also played football in Ujpest, NB I was awarded a total of 21 top goalscorers
The past - Vidi-Ujpest games
The joint cup history of the two teams is very even. We have won 4 times, there have been 4 drawn matches and 4 successes for Ujpest since 1973. Ujpest became the Hungarian champions seven times in a row between 1968 and 1975, it was a huge surprise at the time that in the middle of this unusual series, in February 1973, we defeated them away in the eighth final. Even the 2015 series is memorable, when we beat them 1-0 at home in the semi-finals and 4-1 in Budapest.
Unfortunately, there is also a painful memory, on the occasion of our first cup final, we were beaten 2-0 by them in the final held in Szekszard, so that everyone considered Vidi to be favourites ahead of the game.
