Videoton make it in to the fifth Hungarian cup final

Vidi convincingly beat Ujpest FC 4-1 away from home in the second leg of the Hungarian cup semi-final. That gave the red and blues an aggregate 5-1 victory to make it in to the 2014-15 cup final. This will be the fifth final appearance in the club's history.

The first cup final
33 years ago in 1982 was the first time that Videoton progressed to the Hungarian cup final (it was then known as the Hungarian People's Republic cup). Dunaujvaros Kohaszt were beaten 2-0, before a win over Mohacs Vemend TE, for a place in the last 16. Motim TE were then defeated 3-0 as Vidi made it in to the last four to play MTK VM. That ended in a 1-0 win for the men from Fehervar. Vidi met Ujpest Dozsa in the cup final, which was played in Szekszard. The game ended in a 2-0 win for the Budapest side, which meant a runners up medal.

The second cup final resulted in a silver medal
A long period followed until 2001 when Vidi next made it in to the cup final. A good performance over the autumn saw Vidi continue their cup run in the spring. Nyirseg Spartacus were beaten 2-1. The quarter finals ended with a 2-0 Vidi win over Vasas DH. Usvat and Julinho were the scorers that day.  A Rob goal was enough to give Videoton a semi-final win over BKV Elore. The cup final was played at the Ulloi ut stadium, which was home to FTC. The opponents were Debrecen, who beat Vidi 5-2 to lift the cup.

Third time lucky! Vidi are Hungarian cup final winners!
Vidi entered the Hungarian cup in the second round. September saw a win over Kozarmisleny, and then a game against Baktaloranthaza. The first game ended in a 3-2 win, while the latter side were defeated 2-0. MTK were next up and a 1-1 home draw, before a 2-1 success at the Hungaria Korut stadium. That put Vidi in to the last eight of the cup. Rakoczi were beaten 2-1 at home, which was followed by a 3-1 home win to give an aggregate 5-2 win.

The semi-final placed Vidi with Debrecen. Videoton won 1-0 in Debrecen, which was followed with a 2-2 draw at the Sostoi stadium. That secured Vidi a place in the Hungarian cup final for the first time in 5 years. A significant day in the history of the club took place on the 17th May 2006. Vasas were the cup final opponents with the game being played at the home of Ferencvaros. Normal time ended 2-2 so extra time was played but there were no further goals. The cup final was decided by a penalty shootout. It was Vidi who came out on top winning 6-5!

Cup final runners up in the golden year!
Videoton were cup final runners up in 2011 to go alongside the first league title success. That was the most successful year as a result. A 6-1 win over Haladas with the first game ending 3-0, which was followed up in Szombathely with a 3-1 victory secured a place among the last eight. Honved were next up and the two sides drew 1-1 in Budapest. The story was different in the following game as Vidi emerged 4-0 winners. Kaposvar were next on the road to the cup final. Rakoczi were beaten 1-0 at home and 4-0 away to complete a 5-0 aggregate win. The final was played at the Ferenc Puskas stadium in Budapest against Kecskemet. A great final ended with KTE winning 3-2.

May 20th will be the fifth cup final appearance!
The final will be played on a Wednesday. The opponents will be one of Ferencvaros or Szolnok, who are both involved in the other semi-final. FTC won the first leg 2-0 in Szolnok with the replay being played on the 29th April.  Perhaps we would not be making too much of a mistake to suggest that it will be a FTC - Vidi final. The Hungarian FA will determine the venue at a later date.
