Videoton face Gyirmot for the first time in NB1

Both sides will be going in search of their first league win of the new season on Sunday.

The smaller of the two Győri sides have been knocking on the door of the first division for several years now. They had not managed to get promoted to NB1 until 2016. They convincingly won the second division championship last season with an 8 points gap to second place Mezokovesd.

There was a big change at the club during the summer when Ferenc Bene was replaced on the bench by Istvan Urbanyi. Not too much changed with the playing squad with the general spine of the side remaining.

There are several former Videoton players among the current playing squad. Zsolt Sebok in goal won the Hungarian cup with Vidi 10 years ago. Outfield players include Adam Presinger, Adrian Szekeres and Janos Mate. Attila Simon is a former top goalscorer in the Hungarian first division so he will be a threat in the Gyirmot forward line. Vidi midfielder Adam Simon has a twin brother with Andras Simon likely to face him on Sunday. Our opponents have played out two draws so far this season. Those came in a 2-2 match with Mezokovesd on the opening day of the season. That was followed up with a 0-0 draw with MTK. They did suffer a 4-0 defeat last weekend against Debrecen.

Videoton have yet to face Gyirmot in a league game. They have however met each other in both the league cup and Hungarian cup. Vidi were defending their Hungarian cup success in season 2006/2007 when the two squared up to each other at the fourth round stage. The game ended in a 3-3 draw, but it was Gyirmot who went through 5-4 in the end to cause a surprise.

Season 2011/12 resulted in Gyirmot and Videoton being drawn in the same Group C. Vidi won both those group matches 4-2. The two sides will meet for the first time on Sunday in Gyirmot with the game kicking off at 18:00pm. There will be a full match report and coverage of the game on vidi.hu.
