Speaking with Gyorgy Sandor

The midfielder reacts positively to the autumn season just finished

- How would you sum up the season?
+ I felt that it went well, and the team produced a good performance, playing nice football. The latter is very seldom that a team can play both good football, and be successful at the same time. You can think about the football that Kecskemet played under Istvan Urbanyi, who played attractive football, yet were in a relegation position. There is also Ferencvaros, who were picking up results, when many  questioning their style of football at the same time. Getting back to Videoton, I often heard over the first half of the season, that it was easy for us, as we had a very strong team, with good players sitting on the bench. One of my old managers once said – and it has stayed with me since –, that the starting team always depends on who sits on the bench. Basically speaking, if the subs bench is strong, and you get into the starting eleven, then you are a good player. Getting into the first team, where the subs bench is weak, is not something that is amazing. That is why it is important that the substitutions made are good, and everyone remains motivated. It is also a fact that the manager likes to give me several variations of playing. It is also worth noting the actual current form of players. A good example of this is Andras Gosztonyi, who is a young player, and whose performances were up and down during the season. There were times when he made the starting line up and others when he could not get into the 18 man squad.

- The season's surprise?

+ If I think on a wider basis, then I would say that for me, it was both the Siofok and Paks sides, as well as the performances of Daniel Bode. When I think about Videoton, then it would be Andre Alves, who managed to score 14 goals in 15 games. I am also proud of our goalkeeper, as Bozsovics made a shaky start to his time at Videoton, but went from strength to strength. I also thought that Tomas Tujvel did well when he came into the side. He added a bit of stability to the side in the first few games of the autumn season.

- The best game of the season?
+ I felt that we played well at Zalaegerszeg, and the same applies to our game at Papa. The home game with Ujpest was also entertaining. The home win over Vasas was also important, as it followed our season opening game at Siofok. I believe that we did well in our matches over the course of the autumn season.

- Failure?
+ I thought that was in the match with Honved. It was made even worse by the fact that it was a home game, and I was on the subs bench. It was awful watching from the sidelines, and I only managed to come on for the last half hour. Perhaps I would add our home match with Ferencvaros here, although we picked up an important point, we once again failed to beat them. I would not count the away match at Siofok as a failure. The lake Balaton side have down well, and have surprised any, in both the league and Hungarian cup. The game there was a strange affair as we conceded a soft goal, which knocked us a bit, but we managed to pick ourselves up and get a point.

- Best goal of the season?
+ The goal that  Vasziljevics scored at MTK, was very nice, and came following nice build up play. You only score goals like that in training. That attack had everything, passes, pace on the wings, open areas, players running in, back passes, dummies. Alves also scored some brilliant goals, like the one against Haladas, or against Kaposvar. However, if I have to vote for one, it would be the goal by Dusan.

- We led the table by two points at this stage last season, now it is by seven. We did not managed to win the league over the spring season. Is you a bit worried?
+ We have played one more game, than at this time last autumn. If we would have played one game less last spring, than we would have won the league. We did not do as well as we could have over the spring season, which cost us the title. The question is valid, and it will not be easy for us over the spring season, but we are not scared, rather we are waiting with anticipation. I am really looking forward to the continuation of the season, as we will have several big games at home: Debrecen have to visit us, as do Zalaegerszeg, Győr, which I hope will attract large crowds, and we can play good football.
