The MOL Vidi captain spoke ahead of Vidi's game with Debrecen on Tuesday.
You have won many things within football during your playing career. One of those was the Hungarian Cup in 2000 with MTK. How big was that success in your whole career?
I was a member of the MTK squad back then. I do not really count it as one of the best as I was only a squad member. You could say that the Hungarian Cup is missing from my trophy cabinet. I do not have too many good memories of cup finals. We lost against Ferencvaros four years ago while playing for Vidi. I also had a cup final appearance in Belgium and although we won it and I played in all of the rounds until the final, I had to sit out the final through suspension. I have spoken many times about the things that are missing from my playing career. This applied last year to making it into the group stage with Vidi and I would be delighted if we could lift the Hungarian Cup at the end of May. A cup medal is missing from my collection.
- The team is three steps away from that. The first hurdle is the match this evening against DVSC. You could say that perhaps we were drawn against the hardest of the three possible semi-final opponents?
Yes, but we can calmly say that none of the other three made it to the last four by accident. Perhaps Honved had the kinder run than the other teams but success does not come for free. We have experienced over recent years that it is not an easy task to beat sides from lower leagues. A cup game is always different and smaller sides always seem to pump themselves up better than NB I teams. Teams from the first division sometimes can fall into the trap of not being at the level needed or pumped up fully. We have taken every game during our run to the last four very seriously just like we did in the autumn in the Europa League. We played our strongest side in each round that was possible and there was very limited rotation in the games. This shows how seriously we are taking this competition.
- Games with Debrecen tend to produce big battles over recent years. We have tended to come out on top in these matches. We now have two games over the coming week that will determine whether we go through. We will start at home in the first leg. What kind of game are you counting on in the MOL Arena Sosto tonight?
We have a basic style of play that we have been practising over many months. I do not think that the coaching staff will make changes to this. It is important that we go through the first leg without conceding a goal. We are preparing for a minimum of 180 minutes and plenty of things can happen. I really hope that there will be a good atmosphere in the first leg at home, which was present for the games with Ferencvaros and Ujpest. The supporters can feel the importance of the stage that we arrived at in the Hungarian Cup. The enthusiastic backing that we received in the Ujpest game meant a lot to the team. The support we felt after conceding a goal could be seen in the way we pressed in the last 20 minutes. We ended up eventually scoring the winning goal. The supporters played a big part in this. We could feel that they were beside us in the way they supported us. We managed to repay them with a win. I really hope that there will be a similar atmosphere against DVSC on Tuesday evening.
