Match Report: Big away win at Debrecen

Videoton comfortably won 5-2 away at Debrecen on Saturday to retain their place at the top of the league table.

Videoton were the visitors at the Nagyerdei stadium in Debrecen on Saturday evening. Vidi went into the game in first place against the team sitting in third. Manager Marko Nikolic had to do without injured players Mate Patkai, Paulo Vinicius, Istvan Kovacs and Ezekiel Henty. Also out through suspension was Asmir Suljic.

The missing players did not seem to have an impact on play: Vidi took the game to their opponents and Hadzic played in Lazovic, who tried to lift the ball over the home keeper, but without success. Debrecen's Konyves shot from 11 meters that produced a good save from Kovacsik. Videoton almost took the lead after 9 minutes when Geresi was beautifully played in by Lazovic, and the winger ended up one-on-one with the keeper, but he shot straight at Nagy, and the danger was cleared.

Derbecen then had a similar chance at the other end a minute later. Mengolo could not find a way past Kovacsik, and the resulting counter attack from Vidi saw them go ahead: A smart move involving Lazovic and Geresi, who linked up well, before the winger played the ball across goal for Scepovic to roll the ball into the back of the empty net (0-1).

With 19 minutes played, Konyves went past Stopira and shot from a tight angle, which Kovacsik saved with his feet. Videoton doubled the lead after 22 minutes: Fiola played a lovely ball to Nego, who controlled it and pulled the ball wide of the keeper before calmly slotting it home to make it 0-2.

Debrecen then found themselves back in the game shortly after: Konyves played himself into space following a free kick, and he found the far corner to score. (1-2). The action continued thick and fast in an exciting first half. There was a scrap between the players after a counter attack ended with Lazovic being tripped from behind. The referee waved advantage, while Geresi saw his shot blocked. Tozser then pushed Scepovic to the floor following that. Lazovic and Tozser were both booked before the game continued. Scepovic eventually was also shown yellow after he complained. The resulting free kick saw Lazovic curl a low shot into the hands of keeper Nagy. The counter attack ended with Kevin Varga running the entire pitch but Fiola got back in the final second to block.

Mengolo curled a shot on 38 minutes that was saved by Kovacsik. It proved to be the final chance of a good first half. There were no changes at the break as the game continued as it had ended in the first period. Kevin Varga went on another run for the home team after 51 minutes, with Hadzic tracking back. However, the lively winger bent his shot and it went the passed the far post.

Vidi increased their lead after 59 minutes: Geresi broke into the Debrecen box on the left, before finding Scepovic, who scored with his left foot to make it 1-3.

Keeper Nagy palmed a Nego cross after 65 minutes out for a corner. Lazovic took the kick and Juhasz was fouled inside the box by Tozser. The referee pointed at the penalty spot and Serbian forward Scepovic made no mistake to place the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 1-4. It was also a third goal for Scepovic.

Kovyves tried from distance after 67 minutes, which was well dealt with by Kovacsik. Szolnoki came on for Lazovic. Scepovic went very close to scoring his fourth goal after 75 minutes. Nego found him inside the box, but he could not find the net from a tight angle. Tamas came on for Scepovic shortly after that chance.

Videoton scored their fifth goal of the game when Geresi cut in from the right and bent a sweet shot beyond the keeper and into the back of the net (1-5).

Bence Toth came on for Juhasz in the final 10 minutes. He was involved in the final goal of the game after 91 minutes. A ball from 10 meters by Takacs took a deflection off Toth, and rolled into the net to make it (2-5).

The impressive away win returned Vidi to the top of the table and level on points with Ferencaros, who had earlier won away at Paks. There is now a 10 points gap between the top two and the team third in the table.
